With international gymnastics making its return this weekend at the Friendship and Solidarity Competition in Tokyo, let's take a look back to the last time America got to experience international competition. Though it feels like a lifetime ago as most of the major 2020 meets were cancelled due to COVID19, the American Cup took place on March 7, 2020 in Milwaukee, WI. Simultaneously to our north, USA also had a team competing at International Gymnix, but we're just going to reminisce on the American Cup.
In 2020, the athletes that competed for Team USA were 2017 World Champion, Morgan Hurd, making her senior debut, 2019 Junior National Champion, Kayla DiCello, 2019 National Champion, Sam Mikulak, and 2019 NCAA runner-up, Shane Wiskus.
Hurd and Mikulak finished with all around gold. For Hurd, this was her second consecutive American Cup win. This was Sam's second win at this competition as well, his first being in 2014.
Kayla had an incredible debut performance, finishing the day with all around silver. Shane barely missed the podium, coming in 4th to finish up the meet.
